Task Nº3

In this globalization world, we can see multiple and complex changes at schools, home or companies when we use some techniques that can act positive or negative depending on how we employ them.

Regarding the organizational behavior, the positive changes in the production, communication and managing process come from using different strategies to improve and motivate the way of doing something in a corporation.

One of these strategies is the Pygmalion effect, it is a phenomenon that occurs around the world, and the final result is that a person gets what he/she expects. What I want to say is that in a company the managers can create better workers just by believing in them.

This is the case of Instituto de Cancerología. It is a private entity created to offer an integral service in the cancer education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment in Medellín, Colombia.
In this organization the motivation for the employees and the patients is an important tool, it is used verbally and with activities that help to those people feel as a part of the institute. There is a specific case that can show us how the Pygmalion effect is used, the people who had more years working in the general service area was encouraged when the supervisor said them that they had many capabilities to have better performance and he expected to see them in the accomplish of their duties.
They began to work better and as a present, the institute gave them a SENA course to qualify them. Many of them were promoted to other charges.
Other activity is when the institute gives to the employees a December celebration, in the celebration all the employees receive presents and they are motivated to continuing giving an excellent, quality service.

  1. It's a good example of how the pygmalion effect is shown in the society.
Complementing the topic and the example related with health, another example of the bad side of the pygmalion effect within this area could be the Hypochondriasis disease, which "refers to an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness" (University of Maryland Medical Center)...the worry about being sick is so high, that the person stay in a continue condition of illness. (pygmalion effect)

  2. I would like to add something related to health and pygmalium effect, saying that The pygmalion effect can lead not only to making us feel sick but also to overcoming illness, specially terminal deseases, i'll give you an example:

THE CASE OF A MEDICAL DOCTOR AND UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST [1]
Tony Sattilaro. In the late 1970s Tony was the president of Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia. He won a fight with cancer by changing his diet. In looking closely at Tony's story, one could say that an important element in his recovery is that he surrounded himself with people who believed he could get well. The doctors--his colleagues--told him that he was loaded with cancer and that he had only a few years to live. However, each evening Tony ate a macrobiotic dinner with seven people who believed that Tony's change in diet would make him healthy.
